Four paws cable-laying

That story did not happen to me, but to a friend of mine. A few days ago, by Skype he shared with me one most amazing experience. He is an IT-administrator in a small Programming Company in Charlotte, NC. So, right now I am going to tell you the story in the first person:

“One day I had an urgent need to lay four dozen of twisted pair cables at a distance of one hundred meters. Most of the distance was held over the false ceiling at a height of three meters. Realizing that work in a reasonable time frame is unbearable for me alone, I began to torment my boss on the subject of attracting third-party installers, and he reluctantly agreed. I have developed terms of reference, sent them to different offices and waited.

One of the proposals stood out from the crowd. The boys claimed that they will do the work in just one day, and three times cheaper than any other of their competition! Just in case, I called back and they again said, that they really understand the task. The speed and low cost they offered, was because they use a cable layer. I was intrigued – my dad had to deal a lot with the cable-laying in the army and I was wondering how this device can be adapted to the laying of twisted pair under false ceiling.

On the appointed day just two installers arrived with ladders and tools. Watching the process of unloading, I was looking forward to a miracle machine that can automate the process. Finally a medium-sized dachshund was unloaded out of the van. Before I had time to wonder about the appearance of the animal, I was told that this is the mysterious cable layer.dachshund cable-layer

Included with the dachshund was a special suit with a handle along the back for carrying, a helmet on the head with LED flashlight and a harness. Cable management was carried out by attaching it to the harness and running the dachshund in remote places. This well trained animal smartly raced to the sound of voices or the light of a lantern, dragging the wire. The ceiling could withstand the dog, the power of this “tool” is enough for fifty meters.

Laying speed in long and hard to reach areas was simply fantastic. The dachshund playfully ran in one direction over the top and back through the hallway, scaring the female part of the staff. Even a small emergency in the form of fallen ceiling panels did not affected the dog’s mood: Stretched cable played the lead role of the tether and the dog slowly sank to the floor. The guys said that their little helper has already got used to such situations .

Laughter with laughter, but dachshund quite seriously was on the guy’s company balance sheet – I have been shown the documents. Friendly staff really performed their work in less than a day, and without unwinding the cable and respectively without trimmings. However, the work of our office stopped completely – all the people came running to see the work of the cable layer.”

Job applicants with extensive interviewing experience know that HR-professionals almost always ask the same questions. But the candidates also use standardized phrases, while they themselves think quite differently.

Question # 1. Why do you want to work in our company?

I think: Are you waiting for me to start to praise your company that has existed for only two weeks? No! I sent my resume to 15 companies – and I will work with any company that will offer the best conditions first. As for your company’s position in the Global market – I do not care!

I say: I know a lot about your company – I have carefully studied your website and read about your organization a lot of publications. I really want to join your wonderful team of professionals! In addition, you are a leader in this segment, and for me it is important to work in a reputable organization with a famous name.

Question # 2. Where do you see yourself in 5 (ten, twenty, and so on) years?

I think: In five years I would like to stay an attractive woman, to have all of the same thick long hair, tight hips, marry a handsome loving man, to have my own luxury car, a house in Amsterdam! And you’re talking about work? I’ve thought about it and decided that I do not deserve to stay in your company more than 1 year…

I say: I hope to engage with your company in a long-term relationship. In five years I plan to work for you! Of course, I would like in this time to get a raise if I can earn it…

Question # 3. What salary do you want?

I think: Ufff … Five hundred million dollars a month! That’s how much I need to be happy! And what do you suggest? 5000? Well, I would not expect more, you didn’t  even offer me some coffee.

I say: I will be quite happy with the salary you listed in the job description. Of course, I will be happy if there is a possibility to increase it and get some bonuses.

Question # 4. Why did you leave your previous job?

I think: There was no point sitting there. Three years without a rise, the work – a solid routine, my boss just lost all his shame… And you, seems like you pay more and the office is much closer to my home.

I say: At a previous job I have achieved great success in my job and felt that I have the potential for further professional development. Unfortunately, the company could not offer me a higher position and new exciting challenges, so I decided to quit. For me it is very important to be able to improve my professional skills.

Question 5. What are your merits and virtues?

I think: I dance Cha-Cha as a professional, my cooking is so delicious, I masterfully play the harmonica and my brother is a boxer! Do you want to marry me or hire me? My main advantages, merits and virtues as a specialist are listed in my resume – pick any!

I say: perseverance, hard work, teamwork, responsibility, honesty, diligence, punctuality…

Question # 6. What are your weaknesses?

I think: You definitely want to marry me! I am, for instance, very lazy. And more… Do you really care? I will not say anything. You can assume that I’m almost a saint.

I say: Sometimes I pay excessive attention to the details, which is why sometimes I check back several times. Fortunately, this disadvantage is compensated by my ability to plan working hours so it does not affect the speed of execution of the tasks.

Question # 7. Why a sewer pit hole cover is round?

I think: Ahhh! Again, that question! And why is the sun round, and a house – rectangular? And why has everyone suddenly became so interested in the history of this damn cover?

I say: I think the round shape is a more technologically advanced solution than a square. First, the round cover can not fall into the sewer pit, as its diameter is larger than the hole’s. Second, the circular lid is easier to transport without the use of special tools – you can simply roll it. And third, round cover opens easier than the square one.

Advantages of Becoming a Tutor

Different people might have different motivation for entering the private tutoring world. Here I will expose some of the benefits of tutoring that are considered most important.

Free schedule. This is perhaps the main advantage of becoming a Tutor. There will be more time to pay attention to your family. You will be able to go on vacation whenever  you want, even 2 or 3 times a year and not when the boss lets you go. Life will stop just passing by. You will have enough time for reading, self-development, rest and for household chores.

Good sleep. Especially Owl-type (those, who goes to sleep late and wakes up late) persons will understand me. Doctors have found out that this behavior can not be cured, but nevertheless, the world continues living according to the early bird schedule.

No transport problems. For those who live in big cities, there is an advantage of avoiding trips in public transport, which looks more like a race to the bottom. But of course it applies if you invite students to your home. But even if you are a visiting Tutor, you can compose a special itinerary in order to avoid the rush hour.

Healthy lifestyle. You can always have a home-cooked meal, not just a cold snack or a sandwich. Eating at home is a significant savings. Your budget will thank you.

Tutor can choose a student. So the stress can be minimized. There is no such option in school (University, Collage, Institute). You cannot say to a bad behaved student: "That’s it! I will teach you no more!" And if you are a Tutor - you are free to decide.

Your income will depend only on you. Tutoring is a very well paid job, depending on your experience, professionalism and the ability to promote your services (for example placing your profile in a popular and specialized site)

Tutor chooses methods and learning style himself. There is no need to adjust to the school or collage program.

No Boss. Tutor’s job is an individual work. No comments needed, I think. This advantage is a great relief.

The economical crisis will not scare you anymore. Tutoring is always in demand. Especially now when  educational requirements in Schools, Collage and Universities became more strict - now is a golden age for Tutors.

In a career of a Tutor, the age is an advantage, not a heavy burden. Since it means experience and quality in the educational process.

There are many more good reasons, I would kindly appreciate if you add some in the comments.
